Domestic Violence

Family, domestic, and sexual violence poses a significant health and welfare concern affecting individuals across various ages, socioeconomic backgrounds, and demographic groups, with a disproportionate impact on women and children.

Among the Kalenjin community, this issue is particularly prevalent, with older Kalenjin women, young Kalenjin women, and pregnant Kalenjin women facing heightened vulnerability.

Domestic violence is a pervasive issue impacting individuals worldwide. It encompasses violations of a person’s freedom, security, dignity, equality, physical or mental well-being, and fundamental rights, often rooted in gender-based biases (United Nations Kenya, 2015). This form of violence includes acts that may inflict physical, psychological, or sexual harm on any partner within a relationship (Qureshi, 2019). More broadly, violence is defined as the intentional use of physical force—whether actual or threatened—against oneself, another person, or groups of people, leading to psychological trauma, severe injury, and, in the most extreme cases, loss of life (WHO, 2014).

In Australia, family, domestic, and sexual violence represents a major health and welfare challenge, transcending all socioeconomic and demographic boundaries, with women and children being particularly vulnerable. These forms of violence can cause severe harm to individuals, families, and communities, resulting in physical injury, psychological trauma, and emotional suffering. The impact is often profound and long-lasting, with effects that may extend to future generations, underscoring the need for a comprehensive approach to prevention and support.

At Legetyo Queens, we are committed to empowering Kalenjin women by nurturing their understanding of self-worth and educating them about equality and their rights. In our efforts to prevent domestic violence, we also prioritize educating Kalenjin boys and men within our society and various communities, aiming to raise awareness and foster a culture of respect and non-violence.

Through our empowerment initiatives, we aspire to address and mitigate the prevalence of domestic violence in our society. By equipping women with the knowledge, resources, and support they need to assert their rights and stand against violence, we endeavor to create safer and more inclusive communities for all.

Join us in our mission to advocate for the rights and empowerment of Kalenjin women, and together, we can create a more equitable and inclusive society for all.
